Kwikset Smartcode 916 Review

The Kwikset SmartCode 916 is the king of the Kwikset SmartCode series smart locks. It is a heavy-duty, smart lock with a touchscreen keypad. Using Z-Wave or ZigBee protocols, the SmartCode 916 door lock can integrate with a compatible smart home hub or be used as a stand-alone home lock. However, to get the most out of this smart lock, you’re going to need a smart home hub as there is no app built for the device.

A leader in residential security, Kwikset crafts some of the best door locks. The SmartCode 916 is no exception. Installation is fairly easy and the lock comes in multiple finishes to look good on a variety of doors. Further more, Kwikset’s Re-Key Technology allows you to use your existing keys or change keys easily without needing a locksmith.

The SmartCode 916 is a Z-Wave or ZigBee compatible device. You’ll need to look carefully when purchasing this lock to make sure you’re getting the right model for your needs.

Installing the SmartCode 916 Touchscreen Electronic Deadbolt

All you’ll need to install the SmartCode deadbolt is a screwdriver and a little bit of time. The installation guide is easy to follow and no additional holes were needed to be drilled when replacing the previous lock. Four AA batteries were included with the packaging and are used to power the electronic deadbolt.

Once the lock was installed on the door, additional programming and setup is required. This is where you will set your keypad’s master code and additional user codes. We found it to be a lot easier to set the lock’s codes using a smart phone rather than the device itself.

Using the SmartCode 916 Touchscreen Electronic Deadbolt

SmartCode’s touchscreen is very responsive with little delay. The numbers are backlit with an LED light making it easy to see in the day or night. To conserve battery life, the LED remains off until it is awoken by tapping anywhere on the touchscreen.

To improve the security of the deadbolt lock, Kwikset created SecureScreen technology. When active, the SecureScreen features displays two random digits before entering your code. SecureScreen makes it more difficult for someone to guess your code.

The SmartCode 916 Deadbolt has a built in alarm that sounds if a user enters a code incorrectly multiple times. The alarm itself can be heard inside or outside the home to alert you or your neighbors of a possible break-in attempt.

Final Word

The Kwikset SmartCode 916 is a good looking and sensible smart lock. It offers a pretty good amount of features for both everyday and smart homes. Installation does not require a degree in technology and just about anyone can install it. One thing that sets this device back is it’s lack of a native mobile app. If you’re going to want to use your smartphone for access, make sure you’re connecting with a the lock with a compatible home automation hub. If you want smartphone access without the hub then these would be better options: Kwikset Kevo Smart Lock, Schlage Sense, or August Smart Lock.
